I’m going to show you exactly how to find best selling fitness products that people will jump out of their shows to buy right now.
(Note: I will not be explaining how to source products, there is a lot of information out there on how to do that.)
We’re going to look at Amazon first since it accounts for 43%+ of all US online retail sales, as reported by Business Insider.
Amazon’s Best Sellers Rank (BSR) is one of the easiest ways to see what is currently selling well. We can use what is currently selling well to look to the future for new fitness invention ideas.
Before we jump in.
Note that Amazon’s Best Sellers list is not as simple as you may think.
Like Google, Amazon keeps their algorithms under lock and key.
Also like Google, Amazon’s goal is to increase user experience. Or in Amazon terms, increase purchase likelihood.
Viral-Launch says that “A product’s Best Sellers Rank…is a calculation of a product’s number of orders compared to other products in the same category within a given amount of time.”
Sellics adds that there are three key performance metrics that Amazon’s “A9” algorithm uses: “CTR (click-through rate), conversion rate, and of course overall sales.”
I wanted to know a little more, so I reached out to them. They were kind enough to give me some great explanations. Here are both of their responses:
Keep all of this in mind when searching for fitness products to develop.
Now that we have a rough idea of how Amazon’s ranking algorithm works, we can start to understand what might make new gym inventions successful.

From this graphic, we can see four key elements. “Best Sellers”, “New Releases”, “Movers and Shakers”, and “Most Wished For”.
Best Sellers are items that are currently selling well. Amazon takes into account previous sales, but more importantly, recent sales.
The items on the Best Sellers list are usually pretty well concentrated. And if they aren’t yet, they will be very soon.
One simple tactic is to find a best selling product and make a slight variation to it. Here’s a super simple example:
You see the #1 selling item in Sports & Outdoors is Resistance Loop Exercise Bands, Set of 5.
You keep hearing at the gym how often they have to buy new pairs of these exact resistance bands for new members.
Wallah! There’s your idea.
Your new product is Resistance Loop Exercise Bands, Set of 50, and your target customer is gyms.
This is super simplified, but you get the idea. You can use “New Releases, “Movers and Shakers”, and “Most Wished For” in a similar way.
And hey, let’s not stop there.
Don’t you just wish there was somewhere on Amazon that told you exactly what customers thought about products and what they wished were different about them? Wait a minute…
There is, and it’s called the review section!
I looked in the review section of the resistance bands, and I’m sure you can guess what the #1 negative review is about. Poor quality.
I would say this is what 80% of negative reviews on Amazon are about. To be brutally honest, a lot of Amazon’s items are cheaply made and sourced from China. Trust me, I would know, having sold cheaply made items sourced from China before.
The problem is that consumers haven’t quite had enough of cheap products yet. There have been small shifts in recent years, but we still know that price is the #1 factor in the consumer’s decision making process.
However, there is always going to be a niche of consumers who want higher quality made products. That is probably your best bet of selling a product like this in the future.
Now let’s take this to the next level. Rather than just going by word-of-mouth or sticking to Amazon reviews, what’s another way we can go out and search for new ideas? The answer is…
Reddit (or similar forum communities) are goldmines for this sort of thing. It takes some practice to master, but once you do, you will be finding ideas left and right.
Currently, as I am writing this, news just broke about Strava, a fitness tracking app, giving away the location of secret US army bases.
I went on Reddit, typed in “Fitness”, and the first post that popped up was…
To summarize, apparently members of the army had the app active while walking, roaming, and running around the army base premises. The heat signatures were recorded in the app, and now everyone knows the layout of the army bases.
Anyways, my point here is that Reddit is chalk full of ideas for the best fitness products to sell.
I can almost guarantee you that there will be new products coming out soon that prevent this sort of thing from happening in the future.
Reddit basically does all the work for you. Check for posts that have a lot of comments and points racked up, and solve commonly occurring problems.
Let’s look at another one.
This time I searched, “Fitness product”. This is what I got.
Surprisingly, Titan Fitness Products were the subject of all three top results. The first result was perfect, a product review (or rant).
This review tells us two things:
- What is currently on the market
- How to make it better
This particular rant goes on about customer service, product quality, and shipping.
So now all you need to do is make a better quality product with better shipping and customer service. Easier said than done.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg for Reddit. Get creative with your searches.
Try it yourself; go mining for some gold.
Another fantastic place to look for new product ideas is the first place most people go to purchase products, Google.
Here’s how you can use Google to know what people want in fitness products.
We know that Google’s top three ranking factors are
RankBrain takes into account dwell time and click-through rate. If users are spending a long time on pages and clicking on links, chances are, that is what customers are looking for.
This can give us a great idea of what is trending on the market and what customers are looking to buy.
For example, I just searched “fitness products” into Google.
Google is laying out exactly what consumers are looking for.
One way to use this is to start clicking on the top ranked pages. Once on their websites, find the products they sell, and look for items with under 4-star ratings.
Again, go to the reviews and find out why they aren’t getting 5-star reviews. Then, make a product that will get 5-stars.
Another way to get the most out of Google is to use the advertisements at the top of search pages.
These advertisements are hours and hours of research laid out in one place for us.
What do I mean by that? Well, each of those companies spends countless resources searching for what consumers are looking for. They do research on products, keywords, colors, and even on the target customers themselves.
Use that to your advantage. Whatever pops up on the first page of Google is usually what is trending. Find that trend and take it to the next level!

“But there’s too much competition…”
I hear this way to often. I’m going to tell you the truth.
If that’s your opinion right now, then it will always be your opinion.
It’s one thing to be cautious about entering an overly-crowded market. It’s another to constantly be making excuses.
The e-Commerce market has been growing almost every single year for the past 20 years. And there isn’t signs of that slowing down much in the coming years.
Yes, Amazon has thousands and thousands of third party sellers. But winners find a way to get it done if they really want it.
